Welcome to Staarup Hovedgaard, the only privately-owned manor in the region open to the public.

At the loft, You find a permanent exhi-bition about the history of Staarup Hovedgaard and surroundings from
stoneage to the present day.
It contains a collection of stonetools
and the history of the manor house
including the story of its rescue and restoration at the eleventh hour.

The listed manor house was build 1554 by chancellor Bjørn Kaas over a cellar of a former building from the 14th century. The old house is situated on a great earthwork surrounded with moats.

In the 1980s the historically and architectonically valuable building of Staarup Hovedgaard was turned into a ruin being uninhabited for 20 years. But an extensive and costly restoration realized by the present owners, now has ensured the future of the old house.

The manor house is furnished as a private home with unique interior, which makes its more than 650 years of history come alive.

In the barrel vault cellars you find yourself back in the middle-ages. In the Great hall you sense the nobility of the Renaissance and in the other halls and rooms of the manor house, you experience the lifestyles of the Baroque and the French Empire.

It´s a hunted house...

Most old manor houses are hunted. So is Staarup Hovedgaard. Our most famous ghost is  "The white lady" - Birgitte Rosenkrantz, who Christian  the 4.th. let decapitate in 1603.
There are other spooky things on Staarup Hovedgaard. In the medieval cellar, you will find the prison of the manor,- "the doghouse"   - where unmanageable copyholders where brought to sit for weeks or months, when they had hampered the bailiff.

The moat.
